How did studying at UQ help get you where you are today?

After completing my Graduate Certificate of Agricultural Science at UQ, I started my own sustainable gardening and landscaping business in Brisbane with my life partner.

Studying at UQ gave me vital foundational knowledge of plant science through subjects such as Integrated Pest Management and Weed Science.

I also strengthened my leadership skills through studying Rural Leadership. In this subject, I reflected on my own capacity as a leader and worked to expand on my gaps with the literature provided and deep reflection tasks.

What was the best part of your time at UQ?

I chose to study at UQ because of the excellent reputation of the Agriculture department.

The practical classes on the farm and the many thought-provoking, robust discussions I had with my peers and teaching staff during the Rural Leadership course were some of the most memorable experiences I had.

What kind of work do you do as part of your job?

I’m the co-owner of McMaunder Gardens in Brisbane with my life partner Eve.

We enjoy getting our hands dirty and are passionate about using evidence-based practices to design, install and bring to life beautiful sustainable gardens in homes across Brisbane.

Our business also provides residents with science-based plant management expertise and sustainable pest management solutions to keep gardens flourishing and promote biodiversity.

What is the best part of your job?

I just love working outside with Brisbane’s diverse flora and fauna. The ability to create biodiversity in gardens all across Brisbane brings me so much joy and reward each day.

My goal is to grow the business and build a team of passionate people to join McMaunder Gardens on our quest to build Brisbane’s backyard biodiversity one garden at a time.
