Melanie Dixon

"Following my passion for operational environmental management, last year I started my own environmental consultancy specialising in this field."

How did your UQ study help you in your career?

The diversity of my course provided the building blocks of my career. Also the connections and friendships that I made while studying. I continue to meet up and work with fellow UQ students and lecturers today.

What kind of work do you do as part of your job?

Following my passion for operational environmental management, last year I started my own environmental consultancy specialising in this field. Applied Eco Solutions provides environmental management support to companies for their infrastructure and construction projects.

Through Applied Eco Solutions, I am also promoting sustainable business practices. It is important to me to implement the same practices into my company that I promote with my clients. Recently we were recognised as an ecoBiz Champion through the CCIQ ecoBiz program with reductions in energy, water and waste.

What advice do you have for someone deciding how to start their career?

Be open to trying different roles and industries.

I have had a very diverse career working in various industries. This has included working for environmental consultancies, a government department, and within the energy and port industries. This has allowed me to find a role most suited to my skills and interests.

What are your plans for the future?

To continue to grow my business and provide opportunities for other upcoming environmental professionals.
