Maria Renata Cao de la Fuente

"I’m finding innovative solutions to avoid deforestation and degradation of ecosystems."

Why did you study environmental management?

Before studying environmental management I worked for a Non-Government Organisation as a coordinator of ecological restoration projects. This gave me the opportunity to work with communities in the tropical rainforest, which became my life’s project.

What was the best part of your time at UQ?

The wide range of courses introduced me to the topics of protected area management, and rural community development. However, I must say that the most important skill I acquired was to always be a ‘critical thinker’.

What does a typical day in your job look like?

In my job every day is a new, exciting and unusual adventure. I spend time walking in the jungle, spotting wildlife and working with people that are so culturally different to me. I listen to their stories, share moments, and learn from them. Every day in my job is very rewarding.
