"The industry placements and research projects I undertook throughout my degree provided valuable hands-on experience and gave me the opportunity to apply theory into practice."

Why did you study OHS?

I chose to study at The University of Queensland because of its world-class reputation in occupational hygiene and occupational health and safety science. UQ’s Masters of Occupational Hygiene / Occupational Health and Safety Science program offers extensive research opportunities and a progressive curriculum with an emphasis on practical experiences — ensuring students are well-prepared for real-world challenges as a Health and Safety Professional.

My degree provided a strong foundation in a range of topics including safety management systems, occupational hygiene, ergonomics, and behavioural safety which has proven invaluable in my role as a Safety and Environment Advisor at Dreamworld.

The industry placements and research projects I undertook throughout my degree provided valuable hands-on experience and gave me the opportunity to apply theory into practice.

Studying at UQ taught me essential soft skills like communication and rapport building which have been vital in my career progression within the safety industry to date.

What was the best part of your time at UQ?

During my time at UQ, I was fortunate to experience many highlights and memorable moments.

While studying had its roller coaster moments and fair share of challenges, the university provided a supportive learning environment and dedicated academic staff which allowed me to discover my potential.

I particularly enjoyed my industry placement and research project which not only expanded my knowledge but provided real-work experience and valuable industry connections.

Beyond academic learning, the UQ values creating a safe and inclusive environment for students to engage in extracurricular activities to build flourishing connections and life-long friendships. UQ’s lively campus life allowed me to form lasting friendships, many of whom I maintain close ties with today.

Overall, I felt UQ was the ideal place for me to pursue my academic and career journey, and I enjoyed being a part of this vibrant campus community.
