"I enjoy being at the forefront of a rapidly growing field, discovering huge numbers of novel viruses and revealing how they interact with the organisms and ecosystems around them."

How did studying biomedical science at UQ help get you where you are today?

The second- and third-year microbiology subjects that I took introduced me to the field I’m now specialised in.

Aside from the actual course content — which was of course expansive and captivating — studying at UQ gave me excellent opportunities to network with experts in the field.

I met my Honours supervisor, Professor Roy Hall, through my Virology course and it was Professor Hall who introduced me to Professor Edward Holmes at the University of Sydney where I undertook my PhD and where I currently work. Today, I'm still in contact with many researchers in my field who are at UQ.

What kind of work do you do as part of your job?

My core responsibilities include conducting field work, lab work, analyses (mainly computational/bioinformatic), and writing papers to publish in academic journals. I am also involved in supervising students and providing training in our protocols.

What do you enjoy most about your field?

I enjoy being at the forefront of a rapidly growing field, discovering huge numbers of novel viruses and revealing how they interact with the organisms and ecosystems around them.

My plan is to continue my academic career and work towards eventually having my own research group.

What advice would you give to anyone starting their career or thinking about studying at UQ?

Make use of opportunities to make valuable connections with experts in your field of interest! At UQ there are so many social groups, so take advantage of these chances to make lifelong friends who will encourage and support you in your journey.
