Anna McDougall

"Throughout my degree I had the opportunity to engage in fieldwork and projects, which further solidified my passion for STEM and equipped me with the hands-on experience I needed to enter the mining industry."

How did studying Environmental Management at UQ help get you where you are today?

Studying a Bachelor of Environmental Management at UQ provided me with a strong foundation in understanding and addressing environmental challenges.

The knowledge and problem-solving skills I gained during my studies have been invaluable in my current role as a Project Engineer at BHP.

Throughout my degree, I also had the opportunity to engage in fieldwork and projects, which further solidified my passion for STEM and equipped me with the hands-on experience I needed to enter the mining industry.

What was the best part of your time at UQ?

I lived at the Women's College during my time at UQ and have made lifelong friends from my time here. I am still involved with the Women's College and return multiple times each year for Industry Events or other celebrations.

A highlight for me was being recognised as part of UQ's Class of 2015 Future Leader's Program.

I was also heavily involved in the UQ Geography and Environmental Management Society (UQ GEMS) and was also a UQ Outreach Student Ambassador, a PASS Tutor and a Student Consultative Committee Member for UQ’s School of Geography, Planning & Environmental Management.

I loved playing sport and have many fond memories from AFL, Rowing, Touch Football and Soccer. I still play soccer at UQFC and spend many weekends on campus at the sporting facilities to this day.

What is the best part of your job as an Engineer?

I’m currently working for BHP as a Fly-In Fly-Out Project Engineer based at Saraji Mine in Central Queensland.

I love the dynamic nature of being an Engineer and that no two days are the same! Every day presents new challenges and opportunities, whether it is optimising and delivering projects, improving safety measures, working with internal and external stakeholders or solving complex problems.

I’m also currently working towards completing my Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)(Civil) which has been a challenging yet rewarding learning and growth experience so far.
